About SymbolsAD
SymbolsAD is a web site by AJleRoux CC, a South African graphic design firm. The site content is generated mostly by Andre le Roux, president of AJleRoux CC.
Neither Andre le Roux nor anyone else at AJleRoux CC has any formal training in theology. Instead, the content of this site is based on research and a sincere attempt at objectivity.
Our beliefs
We are non-denominational, Protestant Christians. We believe in the Trinity: God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
We firmly believe in the deity of Jesus Christ and that salvation is through His grace alone.
Being Protestant, we cannot agree with the doctrines and practices of the Roman Catholic Church.
Being Protestant, we cannot agree with the doctrines of Christian denominations that deny the deity of Jesus Christ.
Being Protestant, we accept the Textus Recepticus as the true and only Word of God and view the King James Version of the Bible as the most accurate English translation thereof. We reject any doctrine that contradicts the teachings of the Bible.
Our views on symbols in religion
We are neither for nor against the use of symbols in religion.
Powerful as they are, we do not believe that symbols have any intrinsic power. The only power they have is assigned power through association. In other words, a symbol like the hexagram can mean one thing to satanists and something completely different to Jews. We don't think that all Jews are satanists just because they share a symbol with satanists! Similarly, a fist in the air can symbolize communism, victory, determination, black power etc. - depending on your preference.
We do not believe that the use of images in religion (or anywhere else) is a transgression of the 2nd commandment (Exo 20:4). From our own study it seems clear that God forbids idolatry and not the use of images in general. Moses did after all make a serpent of brass and placed it on a pole in obedience to an instruction from God. (Num 21:8-9)
Our motivation & goals
This site is not intended as a ministry - but that may change in the future :-)
For now it is primarily an exploration of Christian symbols for the sake of exploring Christian symbols. As graphic designers we are fascinated by the visual language in symbols, but disappointed to find that most literature on the subject takes a very one-sided approach to it. Our aim is to bring some objectivity to the study of the history and meaning of popular Christian symbols.
The secondary aim of the site is to serve as a showcase for and source of traffic to our graphic design services.
